From rest and recreation to activities and enjoyment
Tired city dwellers were first drawn to Gålå in the early 1890s because of its summer farms. One group met at Tinghaugen, and decided to build a sanatorium in the surroundings of the summer farms where they were staying, so that people could enjoy the fresh air and tranquility of the place.
Golaa Høifjeldssanatorium was already up and running by 1892, and people came there from the towns for recreation and rest. They relished days filled with fresh air, good food and beautiful views of Lake Gålå and the peaks of the Jotunheimen and Rondane mountain ranges. The place, which was quite well equipped by the standards of the day, with servants and a daily postal service, attracted travellers from around the world.
Over the course of its 100-year history, Gålå Høgfjellshotell has changed its name and appearance many times. If you visit us now, you will be visiting a pleasant, high-quality hotel with 42 rooms and a traditional storehouse tower.
The food bell in the storehouse tower used to call the workers in when it was time for some food and rest. Today the bell is only used to herald festivals, but the characteristic tower adorns both the hotel and our logo. It is a trademark of the integrity, tradition and culture on which Gålå is based.
